History and geography of the Linguistics Olympiad
The first linguistics olympiad for school children was held in Moscow in 1965. Since then, the idea has spread to many other countries, but the UK didn’t hold its first olympiad (called UKLO, the UK Linguistics Olmpiad) till 2010. Countries which hold a national olympiad can also send one or more teams (of four competitors) to the annual International Linguistics Olympiad.
- Olympiads exist in other subjects, especially in mathematics and the natural sciences; but they also include olympiads in philosophy and geography.
