Help directly
- Recruit markers among staff and students, and maybe even organise a markathon.
- Try writing one or two UKLO problems, and offer them to UKLO. The problem team will consider them when choosing problems for Round 1 or Round 2. If they decide not to use them for UKLO you can still use them with your students.
- Host a bootcamp. (For more information about this, contact us.)
- Offer your help as a member of the UKLO team. (NB This is especially relevant to those who have recently retired.)
Outreach
- Ask UKLO for a list of local schools (based on postcode) with mailing addresses, and invite them to a CPD session (say, on a Saturday afternoon).
- Mention UKLO in your admissions information as a positive feature.
- Mention UKLO in open days.
- Start a UKLO club for undergrads to support them going back into their old schools to promote UKLO.
- Appoint undergrads as linguistics ‘ambassadors’ to local schools (like the ones in MFL departments).
Your teaching
- Use UKLO-style problems in teaching linguistics. If you borrow our actual problems, please give credit to their author and mention UKLO.
Non-UKLO
- Write accessible teaching material for LASER, i.e. for general use in classroom teaching of English Language, or of MFL, or of any other subject (e.g. the language of mathematics).
- Write accessible reference material for teachers.
- Get your university to support UKLO with some staff time. (Within statistical education, a pressure group very nearly succeeded in getting a university to second a member of staff for a couple of days a week to work on promotion and resources.)
